IRISH CULTURAL SOCIETY MEETING - Oct. 19, 2008 The business meeting of the Irish Cultural Society was called to order at 3:21pm by Vice-President Lou Kelley. President Bob Slattery was not in attendance. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lou, followed by the invocation by Father White. Minutes of the previous meeting in September were read by the secretary and approved as read. Bob Barron gave the monthly treasurer’s report on the ICS finances. He had several copies of the report to hand out to interested members. He reiterated comments he had made the previous month on the budget which had been accepted in September by the general membership. Kay Delaney said that there had been a good response this past month by people renewing their ICS memberships and making necessary changes to their membership information for the coming year. The cut-off date for renewing is October first every year. Today there were 31 members and 1 guest present at the meeting. Sheila Carrola, program chair, talked about the upcoming Christmas party at the Old San Francisco Steakhouse, mentioning the menu, cash bar and music available. She informed us that Joan Moody, president of the Harp and Shamrock Society, has invited the Irish Vice Consul, Tim Reilly, to be our guest of honor at the party being celebrated jointly by the ICS and the H&S this year. Instead of door prizes this holiday season, the ICS membership has voted to make donations to the Fisher House on Fort Sam Houston which helps families of our injured military who are recuperating from their injuries at Brooke Army Medical Center. Please make your checks out to the ICS, and our treasurer in turn will write one large donation check to the Fisher House. If you need an individual letter for your financial records, make the check out to Fisher House and send it to Ethna Torres. The cut off for the donation is the end of the Christmas party on December 5th, and there will be a drop off box at the next regular meeting in November as well. Presentation is planned to be made at the Fisher House by December 15th. Sheila asked that you make your reservations as soon as possible for the party, and that the next newsletter would have more information and the reservation form included. Under New Business, a motion was made after discussion that anyone donating $100 to the Fisher House would be granted two free drinks at the Christmas party, and this idea was approved by the general membership. Sheila mentioned that Celtic Thunder would be performing in San Antonio on November 22nd, and she asked about interest in getting tickets at a group rate. A few people were interested in going, but not enough to warrant a group discount on tickets. The business meeting ended at 3:52pm, and was followed by a refreshment break and an interesting presentation by author John Kerr about his recently published novel, Cardigan Bay. Several ICS members were so intrigued that they purchased copies of the book that were available from the Twig Book Store representative who attended the meeting. A copy is also available from the ICS library. Respectfully submitted, Susan Feeley | ||
