IRISH CULTURAL SOCIETY MEETING - NOVEMBER 19, 2006 The meeting of the Irish Cultural Society was called to order at 3:15 PMby Gene Logan, President. A prayer by St. Patrick was given to start the meeting. There were 36 members present. No guests were in attendance. The minutes were read and approved. Bob Slattery, Treasurer, reported that the ending cash balance thru October is $6493.77 {see attached treasurer's report}. (Not included in Minutes) Suggestions were given regarding the scholarship committee in regard to the problem of plagiarism involving essay writing for the purpose of awarding s financial prize for the best essay. Suggestions were to restrict the subject to one specific book or subjects, persons, etc. Old business included a reminder that the date for the combined Irish Cultural Society and Harp and Shamrock Christmas party is December 2, from 6 to 10 PM at the Old San Francisco Steak House. Lou Kelley reports that the ICS website, www.irishculturalsociety.com is "up and running." Speakers are needed for the Jan. and Feb. meetings. Activities for March include the St. Patrick's Day parade and Irish Heritage day which needs presenters, vendors, entertainments, etc. Maura volunteered to contact vendors and entertainers. Sister Carmel suggested that we choose a theme for the Irish Heritage Day event. Kay Delaney, membership chairman, reported that members Gene Youngston and Kay Chamberlin passed away. Jim Lovell is ill with cancer. New business included ways to possibly attract more members. Suggestions included identifying Irish surnames in the phone book and possibly sending them letters inviting them to meetings of the ICS. Other suggestions were to have "greeters" at the meetings and perhaps reminders by the telephone committee. Also we were reminded of a fundraiser on Sunday, March 25 to benefit the Brigideen Sisters. A letter giving this information will be sent out in January. The "Green Santa" event will be held on Jan. 7. The meeting adjourned at 4 PM.
